Is Okko The Exiled Worth It? Reviews So Far
All-language Steam reviews. We do not give a score of our own: nobody here is passing off a verdict as a playtest.
Steam review count checked:
What people like
- Pixel art
- Nearly every review leads with it. Moonshen's hand-drawn sprites and animation are the main reason many people bought it.
- Combat with a hook
- Bouncing off enemies, launching them into each other and the heartbeat-timed crits get repeated praise once they click.
- Bosses
- Big, varied, pattern-based fights. Press and players both single them out.
- Soundtrack
- Reviewers keep naming the music as a highlight; one says they stopped just to listen to it.
- Difficulty
- Most English reviews describe it as challenging but fair. Steam lists no difficulty settings.
What people complain about
- Controller input at launch
- Double inputs with Steam Input on, and stick movement that drops forward inputs. Both acknowledged by the developer; see the fix log.
- Down-attack bounce
- Hitting the skulls with a down-attack is finicky unless you start the attack well above them.
- Weak plain attacks
- If you ignore Focus Mode and heartbeat timing, damage feels very low by the second or third stage.
- Checkpoint exits
- Choosing to leave a stage from a save point restarts that stage, and there is no fast travel inside levels.
- Small annoyances
- No mute when tabbed out, some buttons cannot be rebound, an occasional freeze on pause, machine-sounding Chinese translation.
Fixes the developer has promised are tracked on the fix log.
Critics
Early press is positive with the same caveat as players. Movies Games and Tech called it a fantastic retro action-adventure with great bosses and rewarding secrets, but singled out clumsy traversal controls. Dutch site Gamestic praised the pixel-art world, characters and mythic story. A Metacritic page is live; check it for an aggregate once more outlets have reviewed it.
Who should skip it
- Players who want a sprawling metroidvania map. This is a stage-based game with a hub.
- Anyone who hates losing currency on death. You lose part of it (less than in the demo, and Pacts can reduce it further).
- Controller-only players who do not want to touch settings before the stick patch lands.
Before you buy
Is Okko The Exiled good?
Early reception is strong: 31 of 34 Steam reviews were positive the day after launch (91%). Praise centres on the pixel art, bosses and combat; complaints are mostly about controller input, which the developer is patching.
Is Okko The Exiled worth $14.99?
For fans of 2D action platformers, most reviewers think so. It is short (around 6 to 12 hours, more for 100%), so players who only buy long games may want to wait for a sale.
Is Okko The Exiled hard?
Moderately. Reviewers call it challenging but fair, with some precision platforming and pattern-heavy bosses. The developer describes their approach as closer to "tough but fair" Hollow Knight than to games with assist menus.
Is Okko The Exiled like Hollow Knight?
In tone and difficulty a little, in structure no. It is level-based with a hub rather than an open, interconnected map. Reviewers compare the feel to Shovel Knight and Castlevania.
