Okko The Exiled Controller Not Working? Steam Input Fix
Controller trouble is the single biggest complaint from Okko The Exiled’s launch week, and it has two different causes. Work out which one you have first.
Symptom 1: double inputs, or Okko will not move or jump
Menu selections skip two items at a time, every press seems to register twice, or Okko just stands there. This is Steam Input processing your controller at the same time as the game’s own controller support. The developer’s pinned guide says the fix is to switch Steam Input off for this game:
- In your Steam Library, right-click Okko The Exiled.
- Choose Properties.
- Click Controller.
- Under Steam Input Status and Override, pick Disable Steam Input. (The default setting also works if it does not enable Steam Input for your pad.)
Players on the forum confirmed this fixed both the double inputs in menus and the character not moving. The developer said they are looking for a way to let Steam Input stay on without double inputs in a future patch.
Side effect: with Steam Input off you may not get your preferred button icons. The game shows Xbox, PlayStation and Switch prompts automatically for those controllers.
Symptom 2: the stick ignores forward inputs or feels wrong
If Okko randomly stops moving forward, jumping kills your momentum, or down-attacks miss skulls when you use the analog stick, that is a separate problem. The developer posted on launch day that they were working on a control-stick fix, expected the next day.
Until it lands:
- Use the D-pad. A reviewer playing on a pad says the D-pad handles much better than the stick.
- Start down-attacks a little higher above skulls than feels natural.
Track whether the patch has shipped on the fix log.
Keyboard players
The game supports keyboard-only play, and the developer says every keyboard and mouse binding is remappable. On a controller only some buttons can be remapped: the game is built in Unity and the developer called the rebind system “a nightmare to program”, which is why a reviewer could not move Focus and the potion toggle. The Inventory’s Pact equip binding is also not obvious (Pacts guide).
Default pad layout on Xbox, from the developer: RT Focus Mode, Y special attack (projectile; Down + Y for Dragon Break), LT + face button for potions, RB dash once unlocked, View for the info screen.
Steam Deck
On Steam Deck, Steam and Xbox prompts show automatically. The developer’s full Deck report is on the PC and Steam Deck page.
Still broken?
Post in the game’s Steam Community forum with your controller model. The developer has been asking that exact question and replying within hours.
Thanks. Noted on the Old Throne board.
